France ~ The First Parachute

Crazy people jumping out of perfectly good airplanes have always fascinated me.   Modern technology tends to keep them alive to repeat the process time after time inmost cases.

However, historically, it seems that far fewer adventurers and aerial specialists survived their leaps into a clear open sky.

Witness the stated title of a French drawing of the first parachute.  Doesn’t that basket look a little heavy for the canopy above it?  Well, no matter, the brave aerialist was dressed well so that he would look good in the morgue.
