Apparently, advertisers and tobacco companies in 1896 were crazy. Imagine asking your wife to stop by the tobacconist to buy a plug of Battle Ax. According to the 4 July 1896 advertisement for the product, she knew that it was a bargain.
Reference Battle Ax and your wife in the same sentence and she may come home with a full case of Battle Ax. What a better way to kill you than to rot out your mouth and throat with the very product you asked her to buy.
Can’t you see her staring down at your disease ravaged body saying, “Battle Ax Indeed!” “Goodbye Ralphy.” “Killed by your own stupid habit …. and it was done at a bargain price too!”
