Faces of the Great Depression

Out of work, living in a canvas tents, two men during the Great Depression sit side-by-side talking about their lives as they push their emotions in to whittling a piece of wood.  

How far distant were they from any hope of a better life?   How  close is America to scenes like this on a grand scale today?
