Historical Sketch ~ Granary Burial Ground

Perhaps best known today as a tourist attraction, the Granary Burial Ground serves as the final resting place for thousands of early inhabitants of Boston.Granary_burial_ground

Signs on the gate tell us that buried within are victims of the Boston Massacre, Josiah Franklin and his wife (Parents of Benjamin Franklin), Paul Revere, Peter Faneuil and John Phillips, first Mayor of Boston.

Members of my own ancestral family, Pilgram and Rebecca Richardson Simpkins, are also interred in that hallowed ground

A stroll through the cemetery reveals the graves of John Hancock, Samuel Adams and Robert Treat Paine who were signers of the Declaration of Independence..

Granary Burial Ground Is the third oldest cemetery in Boston, having been established in 1660.

Thanks to Google Books, we can all have a copy the book “Historical Sketch and Matters Appertaining to the Granary Burial Ground” in our digital libraries.
