The Cumin or Cumming Clan

I first encountered the Cumming Clan when I found a record of a ‘Miss’ Cumming Cumin_tartanwho married my ancestor Harry Gordon.  I haven’t found grandma’s first name yet but know that she was a Cumming by birth.

The Cummings belong to the Norman house "De Comines".  Robert de Comyn was a companion of William the Conqueror.

The family flourished from 1080 to 1330 in Badenoch.

Sir John, the Red Cumin, was the first Lord of Badenoch and was succeeded by his son John, the Black Lord of Badenoch who attempted to achieve the crown of Scotland.

Sir John the Black Lord was killed by the Bruce and Kirkpatrick clans in the church of Dumfries on 10 Feb 1306.   This caused his clan to want to avenge his death.  They opposed the King who subsequently defeated them in 1308.

The Cummings estates were confiscated and given to the Keiths, Hays and Douglasses who had helped win the Battle of Bannockburn.
