- Notes from Katie Jablonicky:
Martha, husband and children may have migrated to Iowa at the same time as her father and brother, between 1870 and 1880. According to newspaper accounts her husband became afflicted with tuberculosis during his service in the Civil War, and he was probably never very strong. Martha nursed him and her daughter Arzilla in their last days , without herself succumbing to the same malady. In the end, Martha's two daughters and one grandson died of the same disease, and many more grandchildren died before Martha of causes unknown to us. Even her son died young.
Carlson states that the 1910 Federal Census for Town of Brandon, Jefferson Twp, Buchanan Co, Iowa, shows Martha living alone, age 69, 3 children, 1 living, born Ohio, parents both born Ohio, own income.
She married George R. Jackson, 27 Dec 1861 in Ohio. Born 13 Jun 1840 in Adams Co, OH. Died 16 Jan 1894 in Buchanan Co, IA. Buried in Brandon Cem, Buchanan Co, IA. Religion Methodist.
