Rhoda 'Wayne' Howes Obituary
PHOENIX, Ariz. -Rhoda "Wayne" Howes, 92, passed away peacefully in Phoenix, Arizona, on October 4, 2011, due to causes incident to age.
Wayne was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, one sister and one granddaughter. She is survived by brother, Frank Potter (Wanda) of St. Anthony, Idaho; son, Barry Howes (Mary Ellen) of Richland, Wash.; son, Joel Howes (Mary) of Murray, Utah;, daughter, Julie Irwin (Roy) of Glendale, Ariz.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Wayne was born on May 6, 1919, to Ivie Thompson Smith. Her father, Wayne Smith, of the Smith family who homesteaded 480 acres in Lamont, Idaho, died in November 1918, in the flu epidemic. In 1923, Ivie married Lewis Potter; in 1936, they settled on a farm in Wilford.
Wayne graduated valedictorian in 1937, from Sugar Salem High School, where she met her husband-to-be, Boyd Howes.
After working in Idaho Falls, Salt Lake City, Lindon, Utah, and while working in the San Fernando Valley, Wayne reconnected with Boyd, who was working in LA, to attend several famous big band dances.
They were married on July 11, 1939. They moved to Arizona for two years, then to Pocatello, Idaho.
After retiring from IB&T, where she worked as a teller and also in their finance department, she and Boyd became "snowbirds," wintering in Arizona, then moved permanently in 2001. Boyd and Wayne were married 67 years before Boyd passed away December 29, 2006.
Wayne loved to play bridge, golf, tennis and downhill ski. She became a loyal tennis fan for the remainder of her life.
Wayne was loved and admired by family, friends and co-workers. She will be dearly missed.
A private family gathering was held at Hansen Chapel in Phoenix on October 8. An informal memorial will be held on October 22, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Teton Cemetery, Teton, Idaho.
