| Solon was killed in a mining accident |
- Solon was accidentally killed in a mining accident while he was young. He was the engineer for the mine and had the habit of ringing the lift bell before jumping onto the lift platform. On the day of his death, he rang the bell and jumped for the platform but slipped. The engine that pulled the platform was called a 'steam donkey engine' and on this ocassion, quickly jerked as it engaged. The combination of the platform jerking and Solon's leap caused his legs to slip off the platform and his body was crushed between the platform and the shaft wall. He died instantly.
