    Name:

    • Charlie was in his early teens when his mothers's mule came up missing. They suspected it had been stolen and wandered off. After a weeks search, they discovered Charlie target practicing with a Colt 6 shooter and he confessed to trading the mule for the gun. This gun is still in the family.

      Alberta Harms, born Nov. 12, 1897 at Firth, Neb., to John O. and Emma Harms came with her family in 1911 to the ranch south of Valentine. She and Charlie were married Jan. 14, 1918 at the Harris ranch home.

      Charles was a devoted husband but had never heard of women's lib. He never allowed Alberta to drive the car but did permit her to open gates along the trail roads and she was allowed to push if he got stuck. This went on for years. Finally, Marcia Lord gave her driving lessons - when the men were gone. Charlie was surprised when he drove up to a gate and Alberta told him she would drive through. She drove after that.
