| William was gassed during World War I |
- William suffered from the effects of the gassing for many years. After returning home from the war, he spent many months working on his uncle and aunt, Jake & Julia Tower's, ranch in Calaveras and Alpine Counties, in California. The open air and slower life style of caring for the cattle and being on horseback greatly aided his recovery.
