      1911 - 2008

Harold Ashton Colvin was born in Provo, Utah (Pleasant View area) on February 7, 1911 to Tracy Sherman and Zella Ashton Colvin. As a small child he moved with his parents to Loa, Wayne County, Utah where he attended 8 grades of public school. Although he moved from that area many years ago, he still had many cherished memories of life there. He visited often to fish, hunt, and see family and friends.

Harold returned to Provo and graduated from Lincoln High School and L.D.S. Seminary. He then attended Brigham Young University. After graduation he was an assistant in the Chemistry Department for 3 years, earning both bachelors and masters degrees. Harold continued his graduate work at the University of Utah for 1 year, again on an assistantship in chemistry. He completed his course work for a Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis; but because of war requirements, Harold was unable to continue at Minnesota for the degree.

Harold married Ruth Stott in the Manti Temple on September 7, 1939. She accompanied him to graduate school in Minneapolis. Returning to Provo, Harold was employed at the Ironton Steel Plant as a chemist and industrial engineer, and for 14 1/2 years as Superintendent of the Coke and Coal Chemicals Department. He was then transferred to the Geneva Steel Plant, where he was Superintendent of the Coke and Coal Chemicals Department until his retirement in 1972.

Harold was a member of the USS Coke and Coal Chemicals Operating Committee for many years, which required frequent travel to business and steel centers throughout the United States and Canada. He was a member of American Iron and Steel Engineers Association, the Kiwanis Club, and President of B.Y.U. Chemical Society.

Harold has been an active member of the L.D.S. Church and served in many capacities, including ward clerk, bishop's counselor, bishop, stake high counselor, and a sealer in the Provo Temple for 20 years. He was the last of a long line of bishops of the original Pleasant View Ward, which was organized in 1891. He and Ruth served for 18 months in the Canada Calgary Mission.

Harold's hobbies were gardening, fishing, hunting, and he loved his horses and hunting dogs. He was a private pilot and enjoyed flying in his middle years. His posterity will remember him as a wonderful and loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Harold Colvin is survived by his 4 children: Nan (W. Marquess "Dusty") Hale, Dennis (Kathi) Colvin, J. Lee (Tera Page) Colvin, and Kaye (Warner) Woodworth; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Nyra (Andrew) Terry and a brother, Curtis A. Colvin.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at the Pleasant View Chapel, 650 East Stadium Avenue, Provo, Utah. Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:45 A.M. prior to the services. Interment will be in the Provo City Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to info@bergmortuary.com.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the L.D.S. Church Humanitarian Fund.

We would like to express our tremendous gratitude to the staff of Beehive Homes of Orem for their wonderful service to our father. You not only cared for his physical well-being, but truly loved him and filled his emotional needs, as well. Yes, Girls, Daddy had quite a harem!

Many thanks, also, to Comfort Care Hospice of Lehi. You helped all of us find our way through the often dark forest of the last months, and moments, of Dad's mortal life.
