Edwin "Ned" Hiam
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death March 11, 2003, of Honorary Trustee and Honorary Member Edwin "Ned" Hiam of Chestnut Hill and Falmouth, MA. He was 75.
Ned Hiam served the Institution in a number of capacities through the years. An Associate since 1975, he was first elected a Member of the Corporation in 1975 and served until 1998, when he was elected an Honorary Member. He was elected a Trustee in 1977 and served from 1977 to 1981 and 1990 to 1998, when he was elected an Honorary Trustee. Ned was Assistant Treasurer of WHOI from 1981 to 2001, and provided his expertise to a number of committees, including the Audit Committee from 1976 to 1977, Finance Committee from 1977 to 1978 and 1981 to 2001, Investment Committee from 1977 to 1985 and 1986 to 1992, the Employee Retirement Trust Committee from 1988 to 1991, Capital Campaign Committee in 1996, and on the Planned Giving Committee in 1995.
Edwin Webster Hiam was born October 18, 1927 in Geneva, Switzerland. He attended Trinity College School in Ontario, Canada, from 1940 to 1944 and received a B.S. degree in business administration from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1948. He worked as an officer and director of Colonial Management Associates, Inc., in various engineering capacities as Tennessee Gas Transmission Company, as an investment counselor at Foster, Dykema, Cabot & Co., Inc., and most recently as an independent investment adviser, retiring in 2002. He was a trustee of the Museum of Science in Boston, the Edwin S. Webster Foundation, and was a member of the MIT Development Committee. Professionally he was a member of the Boston Security Analysts Society and the Society of Chartered Financial Analysts.
Survivors include two sons, Alexander W. Hiam of San Francisco, CA, and Amherst, MA, and Gerald W. Hiam of Putney, VT; two daughters, Claire Telford of Los Angeles, CA, and Joan Hiam of New Rochelle, NY; one brother, Peter Hiam of Cambridge, MA; two sisters, Elizabeth Valentine of Carlisle, MA, and Frances Holbrook of N. Pownal, VT; and seven grandchildren. His wife, Katharine (Watson) Hiam, died in 1995.
A memorial service will be held Friday, March 14, at noon at the First Church, 26 Suffolk Road (off Hammond Street), in Chestnut Hill, MA. Burial is private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ned¹s memory may be made to the Friends of Mount Auburn Cemetery, 580 Mount Auburn St., Cambridge, MA 02138-5517.
