RICHARD AND HESTER WRIGHT'S CHILDREN
BY THE EDITOR
RICHARD WRIGHT of Plymouth married, about 1644, Hestere Cooke, daughter of Francis 1 Cooke, the Mayflower Passenger, and they had six children, Adam, John, Esther, Isaac, Samuel, Mary; but the birth records of only two of these children, Esther and Isaac, have been found.
Adam Wright 3, born about 1645, married, first, Sarah 3 Soule (John 2, George 1); married, second, Mehitable Barrows. He had six children by the first wife and four by the second wife.
ADAM WRIGHT'S WIVES AND THEIR CHILDREN
BY GEORGE ERNEST BOWMAN
ADAM WRIGHT 3 (Hester 2 Cooke, Francis 1) of Plymouth and Plympton, Mass., was twice married and had children by both wives, hence it is necessary to determine which children were by the first wife and which were by the second. This is of especial importance because the children of the first wife, Sarah 3 Soule (John 2, George 1) had two Mayflower ancestors, Francis Cooke and George Soule; but the children of the second wife, Mehitable Barrow (daughter of George), had only one Mayflower ancestor, so far as known.
The date of Sarah 3 Soule's marriage to Adam Wright, the date of her death, and the date of Adam Wright's marriage to Mehitable Barrow are unknown. Sarah was living 16 March, 1690/1, when she signed the deed printed herewith; but she probably died before 1699, since Mehitable's son Samuel, who died 5 January, 1773, in his 74th year, must have been born about 1699. [Ante, p. 297.]
Adam Wright's will, made 9 April, 1723 [Ante, 4: 239], mentions wife Mehitable; sons John, Isaac, Samuel, Moses, James and Nathan; grandchildren Joshua Pratt and his sister Sarah, the children of deceased daughter Esther Pratt; daughter Sarah, the wife of Seth Fuller; daughter Mary, the wife of Jeremiah Gifford; and daughter Rachel, the wife of Ebenezer Barlow. Of these ten sons and daughters but six, John Wright, Isaac Wright, Esther Pratt, Sarah Fuller, Mary Gifford and Rachel Barlow, were children of the first wife, Sarah 3 Soule. The other four sons, Samuel Wright, Moses Wright, James Wright and Nathan Wright, were children of the second wife, Mehitable Barlow.
The appended abstracts from original records prove that Adam Wright was the son of Richard Wright and the grandson of Francis Cooke; that his first wife, Sarah, was living 16 March, 1690/1; that his second wife, Mehitable, was the daughter of George Barrow of Plympton; that his daughter Sarah, the wife of Seth Fuller of Plympton, was living 22 June, 1725 .
It is evident from the terms of the appended deed, given 14 November, 1738, by the heirs of Sarah 3 Soule, that the grantors named in the deed were, at that date, the only surviving heirs of Sarah 3 Soule. The deed was signed by John Wright, Isaac Wright, Joshua Dunham and Sarah his wife, Ebenezer Barlow and Rachel his wife, and Jeremiah Gifford and Mary his wife. Archippus Fuller is named in the deed as one of the grantors, but he did not sign it. John and Isaac Wright, Rachel Barlow and Mary Gifford are at once identified as four of the children of Adam Wright, as named in his will, and the confirmatory deed from Archippus Fuller, dated 1 September, 1742, proves that he was the son and heir of Sarah Fuller (another of Adam Wright's daughters), who must have died before the deed of 14 November, 1738, was drawn.
Joshua Dunham and his wife Sarah are the only other grantors (in this deed of 1738) to be identified, and it will be shown that Sarah was the only surviving child of Esther (Wright) Pratt. Adam Wright's will mentions "my two Grand: children: viz: Joshua Pratt & Sarah his sister children of my Daughter Esther Pratt decd "Daniel Pratt and Esther Wright were married 23 January, 1700/1,* and had two children recorded at Plympton, Joshua, 27 December, 1701, and Sarah, 1 October, 1703. Immediately following these two births are recorded Daniel Pratt's children, Benjamin and Esther, "by Mary his wife" [Ante, 5: 183] The date of Esther (Wright) Pratt's death has not been found, but Daniel Pratt married, second, Mary Washburn, on 1 October, 1706. † He married a third wife, Annis, as shown by his will, but I have not attempted to identify her.
Daniel Pratt died at Plympton, 7 May, 1739, in his 59th year, and his widow died 21 February, 1760, in her 77th year. [Ante, 10: 220, 221] His will, dated 30 March, 1739, and proved 18 May, 1739, mentions wife Annis, sons Benjamin, Nathaniel, Jabez, James (Under age) and Joshua (under age), daughter "Easter the wife of John Howard" and "my Loveing Daughter Sarah ye wife of Joshua Donham" [Plymouth Co. Prob. Rcds. 8:46] As the son Joshua Pratt was under age on 30 March, 1739, he must have been born after 30 March, 1718, therefore he could not have been Esther (Wright) Pratt's son Joshua, who was born in 1701, and was mentioned in Adam Wright's will dated 9 April, 1723. Esther's son Joshua, therefore, died between 9 April, 1723, and 24 November, 1738, the date of the deed by Sarah 3 Soule's heirs. In the Plymouth town records we find: "Joshua Dunham Published To Sarah Pratt ffebruary 16th 1722/23" [1 :265] and "The Children of Joshua Donham & Sarah Donham his wife "The children were: James, 16 Decembr, 1723; Sarah, 26 January, 1725/6; Joshua, 27 November, 1727, died young; Mercy, 8 November, 1729; Bathshua, 7 January, 1731/2; Elizabeth, 10 dune, 1733; Joshua, 15 February, 1735/6; Lucy, 18 February, 1737/8; Levi, 1 June, 1743; Elisha, 25 November, 1744. 11:106]
On 14 November, 1738, therefore, Sarah 3 Soule's heirs were her sons John Wright and Isaac Wright, her daughters Mary Gifford and Rachel Barlow, and her grandchildren Archippus Fuller (only heir of his mother, Sarah Wright) and Sarah (Pratt) Dunham (only surviving heir of her mother, Esther Wright).
