    Notes
    • In 1559 purchased an estate called "Newport's Place," in Kempsey. He had an older and more considerable estate in the same Parish called Clerkenleap. It was sold by his gr. son Richard (gr.son of 1st wi) in 1650. Will on record at Worcester, written 14 Apr. 1607 and proved 9 Nov. 1607. He describes himself as of the parish of St. Andrew in the City of Worcester, appoints his wife Catherine sole executrix, and speaks of his children (incl. at least 2 sons) and grandchildren. Appointed overseer of estate of Richard Taylor of Kerswell in Kempsey in will, 1595: a poss. family connection, since "Kerswell" was the original name given to the Winslow estate in St. Andrew's. Ancestry from Kenelm back has been researched but no agreement has been reached by scholars as to the correct ancestry. There seems to be real doubt that Catherine was the mother of Edward who married Magdalene Ollyver. "New Eng Hist & Gen Reg" V. 121 pg 25-29, an article by John G. Hunt, B.S.C. of Arlington, Va., discusses possible Winslow ancestry and says his mother "seems most surely to have been Elizabeth Morgan. Subsequent articles in V. 122 & 124 discusses the various opinions and argue that the strongest evidences favor Elizabeth Folliot

An article in "The American Genealogist" vol 41 pg 168-175, by John G. Hunt, B.S.C., of Arlington, VA., says the 1607 will of Kenelm Winslow of St. Andrew in Worcester, named his wife Katherine executrix and referred to his children and grandchildren without naming them. It also says that the year 1551 for the birth of Kenelm was taken from a record in Great Britain Court of Requests, bdle IX p. 3, bo. 405/134 which records a suit brought in 1605 in which Kenelme Wincelowe of Worcester, yeoman, aged 54 years, deposed. Ancestry has been researched by D. Kenelm Winslow of London back to 1425, from Kenelm to Thomas, Richard, William, Richard, Galfird all of Earls Crome, Worcestershire. Thomas, Richard and William and wives are in the IGI but the 2nd Richard and Galfird are not there. Mr. Hunt, in TAG 42:186, says "To go back to Richard Winslow's will, dated 7 Oct. Hen. VIII and probated at Worcester 21 Jan. 1546/7, in 1957 D. Kenelm Winslow of London, in his 'Mayflower Heritage', asserted (pp. 22 f.): 'Through this will and manorial records we can trace how his youngest son, Thomas, moved to nearby Kerswell, a hamlet within the parish of Kempsey . . . . Kenelm Winslow, son of Thomas of Kerswell, sold the farm and moved north to Worcester City. Kenelm's son Edward moving farther north where he set up in business extracting the famous Droitwich salt . . .' In other words, from a study of manorial records, Mr. D. Kenelm Winslow was satisfied that Kenelm Winslow who lived in Worcester was, indeed, grandfather of Gov. Edward Winslow. We think this reasonable and must reject the supposed 'family record' of a birth in 1560 for Edward Winslow Sr. If, as and when the original of this so-called record can be produced for examination, or if it can be substantiated by any parish entry or bishop's transcript entry, we may change our suspicion about the date 1560 in connection with Edward Winslow Sr., but until such time, we view this as an invented record of no value whatever." It looks as if Mr. Winslow of London has also failed to substantiated his statement with any specific record. It would seem that until the manorial record can be produced for examination, we should not accept this as proven. There seems to be doubt that Katherine was the mother of Edward who married Magdalene Ollyver. There is probably the assumption that she was not first wife. A series of articles in "New Eng Hist & Gen Reg", vol. 121-124, by John G. Hunt, B.S.C. of Arlington, Va., discusses the various possibilities, the most promising being that she was Elizabeth, born in 1540 daughter of John Foliott by his first wife, Eleanor Moore.
