    Notes
    • Thomas Eli Farrar was born in 1820 in Yorkshire, England, the son of Eli and Elizabeth Farrar.

He migrated to America at the age of twenty-eight, arriving in New York on 3 July 1848 with his brother John and John's family.

John and Thomas were skilled in the crafts of woolen mills and quickly found work in the relatively newly constructed mills in Massachusetts and shortly thereafter in Lexington County, South Carolina.

Thomas met his wife, Mary Adith Tirrill, a New Hampshire lass who lived on the Canadian border in Stewartstown, New Hampshire. Mary 'Edith' had taken the train south to visit family or friends in Massachusetts and ended up with a husband.

By 1830, the couple had moved to Lexington County, South Carolina where they lived with John Farrar and his family for a short time. Two children were born to the couple during their stay in that state, Helen Marr in 1851 and Thomas Eli in 1853.

The allure of working in the mills quickly dissipated and the brothers took their young families northwest to Walworth, Wisconsin to find their fortune in mining and lumber business. On 26 October 1852, John and Thomas obtained and received United States Citizenship from the court in Walworth, Wisconsin.

The brothers enjoyed a measure of financial success and wrote home to England encouraging their parents to come to America and enjoy its bounty. Eli and Elizabeth Shaw Farrar arrived in New York City on 13 June 1855 aboard the ship "William Nelson" and then traveled to meet their sons in Walworth.

In 1855, third and fourth children were was born to Thomas and Mary Adith Farrar. Their little son died shortly after his birth and was never given a name. He was buried in the Brick Church Cemetery in Walworth. Daughter Juila Elizabeth lived to the age of thirty eight and had children of her own.

Just two years later, bad fortune struck the family, when first Thomas Eli Farrar Jr. died in May 1857, then Elizabeth Shaw Farrar in July 1857 and lastly by Thomas' wife, Mary Adith Tirrill Farrar in November 1857. All three family members were buried in the Brick Church Cemetery in Walworth.

Leaving memories of their loss behind John and Thomas moved their families to Ten Mile, Macon County, Missouri. John obtained a job in government and Thomas was a miner. Their father Eli, worked on the farm.

Mining wasn't the life Thomas wanted and by early 1862 he moved to Copperopolis, Calaveras County, California with his two young surviving daughters, Helen Marr and Julia Elizabeth. Thomas owned a home and a saloon in Copperopolis which provided for the girls as they grew to adulthood. Helen married David Lewis Drew and remained Copper. Julia married Henry Gardiner six years later and left Thomas alone. Shortly thereafter he sold his properties and went to Sacramento in search of a new career.

After moving to Sacramento, California after the marriage of his youngest daughter, Julia, Thomas wrote to his daughter, Helen regularly. Within a few years, the letters stopped coming and Helen could not discover the fate of her father. Travel arrangements could not be secured to Sacramento, so the fate of Thomas is still unknown. It is assumed he died suddenly around 1880. The records of deaths were sporadically recorded at the time but I have traced his work and voter registration records through San Joaquin, Place, and Yolo Counties. His last known residence was in Knights Landing, Yolo County, California.

Finding Thomas' immigration record was difficult because the ship's passenger register was misread by the transcribers. Fortunately, he traveled with his brother's family, thus Thomas can accurately be placed on the ship Columbine that arrived in New York from London. The Castle Garden records spell his surname as Fanan, while other transcriptions read as Farran.
