- The Rodden Brothers
Edward and William Rodden came to Oakdale in 1882 with their father, Gabriel. They established the Rodden Bros. General Merchandise store in 1884 on West Railroad (now Yosemite) Ave in the block north of F street. The site of the Rodden Bros. General Merchandise Store location was moved a couple of times and finally settled in Schadlich's Louvre Hotel building. This is the building which burned in the 1989 Live Oak Inn fire.
The brothers were very successful in their merchandising business and as a result of their increasing operations as cattle brokers and real estate agents Ed and Bill became leaders in the organization of the First National Bank of Oakdale in 1904. The bank was then located in the same business location that had been their merchandise store except next door to the north.
In 1907, William and Edward Rodden were among the supporters for the incorporation of the city of Oakdale and later helped in the organization of the Oakdale Irrigation District, and were instrumental in helping many persons develop businesses and farm land in the area. The brothers moved the First National Bank of Oakdale into their new brick building in 1909.
Bank Robbery
A personal interview by Tim Haidlen with Mellie Rodden Finney on October 7, 1973, tells about the night of the First National Bank of Oakdale robbery: the town bell rang and everyone was out in the street. George Morrison was the town Marshall. Ed Rodden took his sons and his guns and went to the bank to help chase the robbers. George Morrison was shot during the robbery.
SOME OAKDALE BANKING HISTORY
Banking Holiday has prompted us to publish these items of historical data and comment relative to the First National Bank of Oakdale and the Stanislaus County Savings Bank.
These banks have weathered every financial storm since their organization over 28 years ago and have steadily grown in strength and stability. The First National Bank of Oakdale was organized in 1904 by W.L. Rodden, Edward Rodden, Paul Brichetto (father of George and L.F. Brichetto) and associates. The capital paid in at that time was $60,000. A few months later its savings affiliate, the Stanislaus County Savings Bank, was organized with a capital of $30,000. This was all the capital paid to these institutions by these stockholders. The capital of the First National Bank was later increased to $100,000 and the surplus built up to $150,000, entirely through earnings. The capital of the Stanislaus County Savings Bank was increased to $60,000 and the surplus to $100,000. A modest dividend, after the first six months, has been paid semi-annually without interruption to the present time, averaging about 6% per annum. The policy of the management has always been conservative with the ideal of building strong institutions.
Edward Rodden was the first president, Paul Brichetto the 1st vice-president and William L. Rodden the first cashier. Ed Rodden is now chairman of the board of directors, William Rodden is president, L. F. Brichetto and James D. Rodden, vice-presidents, D'Arcy Lee is cashier, J. Alban Rydberg and George T. Morrison are assistant cashiers and E. Gorne is auditor.
The directors of the First National Bank are Ed Rodden, William R. Rodden, W.B. Willms, J.L. Sawyer, Louis F. Brichetto, S. Mondo and D'Arcy E. Lee. The directors of the Stanislaus County Savings Bank are William Rodden, V.A. Rodden, A.E. Schell, L.C. Kaufman, L.F. Brichetto and J.B. Stearson.
The years of service of active officers of the banks are about as follows: E. Rodden, 28 years; W. Rodden, 25 years; D.E. Lee, 15 years; J. Alban Rydberg, 20 years; George T. Morrison, 15 years; E. Gorne, 15 years.

Newspaper article in Oakdale, Californina Newspaper, Thursday, 4 Oct 1934:
In the death of Ed. Rodden Tuesday Oakdale and the Oakdale district suffers an irreparable loss.
The progress and prosperity of the community has been interwoven with the life of Mr. Rodden almost since the birth of Oakdale--since the organization of the irrigation district. City and district are largely a monument to his business sagacity and public enterprise.
As has every successful man, Mr.Rodden had his critics -- but he pursued an unfailing policy of never replying to them. Those who enjoyed his friendship--knew him as an honest, sincere hard worker for the good of the community.
They knew him as a man whose secret benefactions were countless--a man who was always going out of his way to help lighten the load for the farmer and the businessman--with purse string and sound advice always out for those in difficulty.
Wealth never changed him--he believed in the old fashioned gospel of honesty and hard work. He abhorred sham and hypocrisy--wheter by individual or public official. To him there was only the question of right or wrong--there was no middle ground.
