  • Name Abiel Chandler
Born 2 Apr 1807  Concord, Merrimack, New Hampshire Find all individuals with events at this location
    Gender Male
    Occupation silversmith and clock maker
    • Apprenticed about 1820 to Timothy Chandler in Concord NH

He was a partner from 1829 to 1830 with Timothy Chandler in Concord NH as A. CHANDLER & Co.

Although none of his pieces or marks are known and he may not have worked on his own before 1825, we do know from Concord Daily Monitor (Apr. 22, 1881) in referring to his death, that he was a son of Major Timothy Chandler and Sarah (Abbot) Chandler; that he learned from his father the gold and silversmith trade, and clockmaking business. Abiel went into a co-partnership with his father in 1829 under the name of A. CHANDLER & Co. which was dissolved in 1830 (New Hampshire Patriot, Dec- 4). The Concord, New Hampshire Directory of 1844-5o referred to him as maker of philosophical instruments. By 1874 he was listed as a florist and horticulturist. There apparently were two other Abiel Chandlers at about same time; one in Andover, New Hampshire, the other in Concord who should not be confused with this one. Second Congregational Church Records show he was admitted in 1831 and that he had been baptized in 1808.
