"He was a Man of Piety & Religion Adorned with every Christian grace & Virtue & therefore well qualified for ye office of a Deacon, which he discharged in ye first Church of Christ in this Town for about 40 Years with Honesty & uprightness and in the Course of his Life adorned ye Doctrine of his Saviour by a well ordered Conversation:"

John Atwood, Deacon of 1st Church of Christ for 40 years, died Aug. 6, 1754, AE 70 years.
Footstone: Mr John / Atwood 1754. Carved with verticle lines in the tympanum area. Row of flowers between typanum and inscribed data.
1998: Purple slate with diagonal yellow lines. Lichen. Unique symbol, cherub with upward stretched "wings" that tip toward center. Tips seem to hold a fleur-de-lis type carving at center top of tympanum. Leafy scrolls at sides and a six petal flower at top.
Drew No. 1447 Purplish blue slate. Nearly covered with moss. Symbol surrounded with blossems.
