  Notes	He was a Doctor, a Surgeon on General GrantÙus staff, he was wounded at the battle of Petersburg, Va. in the battle of the Burgess Mill, on his Uncle William Burgess land. He was the first American Doctor to reach the ship Maine after it was blown up in Cuba Harbor 15 Feb.1898; A story about this battle is in the Virginia State Library. In 1862 he entered the US Army as an assistant Surgeon, and was assigned as The Medical Officer in charge of the Hospital Transport Steamer "S. R Spaulding" Among other things he was a Teacher, Farmer, Horseman, could handle a ship, was an expert swimmer.
