- ROBERT A. BENNETT OBITUARY
Robert Alden Bennett, son of Robert I. and Evaline Shively Bennett, was born on a farm in Boone County, Ind. December 9, 1909. His mother died when he was 2 years old. Later his father married Ida Hall, who cared for him through his childhood days. The family moved to Hendricks County north of Pittsboro in 1918. Bob attended first the country school, then Pittsboro School.
He was married to Martha Ward October 14, 1928. They were the parents of two children,' Ida Jane and George Robert.
He united with the Pittsboro Christian Church early in life. One thing we all remember about Bob when he was a small boy. He came from his country home to Pittsboro Church. The weather was never too rough for him to come. His record was 5 years without being absent one Sunday. He came to Pittsboro to live when he was 16 years old. It was then he started facing life alone.
Let us then think through the past 20 years. He faced -life when the going was hard. Undaunted, he overcame all obstacles that faced him. (We remember they were many.) Born of fine courage, high hopes and a willingness to work at any task set for him to do, he succeeded.
At the age of 19 years, he married and established a home of his own. His home and family were his inspiration to keep going on after his failing health said, "No."
He has held places of responsibility. These places were upheld with honor, never quibbling about what he thought was right. He stood firm and did it. He was an adept workman at many trades. There were not many things we would not try to do, if needed. Thus, it became a familiar saying, "I'm sure Bob Bennett can do that." He was such a friendly person; no one hesitated to call upon him to help them. He was always there if possible, even to the last month of his life.
In the quiet of the evening he went away. Leaving to mourn his going--the wife and children, one brother, Harold Bennett of Indianapolis, and many relatives and friends. One brother, Ira Bennett, preceded him in death 10 years ago.
