- ROBERT I. BENNETT OBITUARY
Robert I. Bennett, son of David and Mary (Gibson) Bennett, was born near Marble Head, Ohio, July 28, 1868. As a child he came to Indiana, where he has since resided.
On April 20, 1893, he married Evaline Shively. They were the parents of five children: Walter, Ira, Harold, Bessie Ann and Robert A.
Early in his life he united with the Christian Church at Elizaville, but in later years he transferred his membership to the Lizton Church.
Mrs. Bennett died March 26, 1911. He was again married to Ida Hall March 1913. She, too, preceded him in death on August 17, 1936.
Mr. Bennett was well known in this community. He was a farmer, was successful and thrifty, but he was not content in doing one thing (and what he did he did well). He was also a teacher in the public schools for 27 years, gracing this profession with a marked degree of efficiency; at the same time supervising the work on his farm home.
Some writer has said, "The choice possession of truth, honesty, courage and charity, make a man's life worthwhile." Mr. Bennett was such a man. He was an honest, charitable, kindly neighbor and friend. He had the courage to stand without question for what he thought to be right.
He was a man of fine, keen intellect, having a strong desire for study and research. His field of reading was varied, giving him knowledge of most affairs of our world in general. His library was wonderful and complete. To talk with him was a privilege. His friendly, interesting way of telling things was an education and pleasure as well.
On going into the home of his son, Robert, (where he has lived for the past two years) you would find him reading or perhaps helping his granddaughter on something she did not quite understand. The intermingling of old life and the young in this home was wholesome and fine. The kindly ministrations to this man by Robert's wish, Martha, should not be passed without notice, so in this way, he came to the end of the way - intelligent, happy and useful.
So was the life of this gentle man until his death - deep in thought as a scholar of entertaining the children.
He went away from us on October 31, 1940, at the age of 72 years. He leaves to mourn his going: two sons, Harold and Robert A. of Pittsboro, 8 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, one sister, Susan Creek of Indianapolis, and a host of friends. To him we shall not say “Goodbye” but in some farier clime bid him, “Good Morning”.
