| Notes |
- The writer of these lines, had he known Ethel Huggard, could have take his inspiration from the life of this good woman. She truly was a gentlewoman in every sense of the word and as truly did she follow in the footsteps of the Master in going about and doing good. Her gentle manner, her ever sweet smile, her willingness to be of help wherever and whenever she could, will become dearly treasured memories to not only her immediate family but to relatives and friends as well. Her deeds and goodness and kindness will become a monument more precious than any of marble that could be erected to her memory.
Ethel was of a very retiring nature, quietly filling her niche in life to the best of her ability and asking neither honor nor praise. She has indeed counted "that day lost whose low descending sun, found from her hand no worthy action done".
As the mother of a large family, her time in caring for her own would ordinarily have been enough, but not for Ethel Huggard. She gave of her love and devotion to her aged invalid mother, who was given the best room in the Huggard home and tenderly nursed and cared for nearly 14 years from 1922 until April 29, 1935 when she passed away at the age of 73. Sister Ashton was confined to a wheel chair with a crippling infirmity, and many, many times has this devoted daughter taken the time to arrange a party or maybe a quilting so her mother could enjoy the company of friends and relatives and chat with them. Often she was seen pushing her mother in the wheel chair to different socials. shows, parades or to a friend's home to visit.
Her kindness was extended to her husband's father, too, and he often gave he little tokens to show his appreciation. She was good to him, looking out for his comfort and caring for him until he died Dec. 23, 1939 at the age of 83.
Ethel has been a devoted wife and mother to Frank and their 9 sons and daughters. Her death is the first break in this large family. These loved ones have always come first in Ethel's life. She was always on hand if any of them were sick or needed help she could give. After marriage of the cares, sorrows and joys of each have been hers. She has gone into their homes, maybe doing an ironing, or sewing, mending, cooking or helping with the housework, as the need was. Many is the quart of dill pickles that she has made and given to nearly every one of the children. She has helped more than once by staying night and day to nurse a sick grandchild. She has taken the ones that needed help into her home and cared for them until thy were on their feet again.
Planning family get togethers and outings has been a delight to this mother, such as going up the canyon or to the parks or at home, so that the family would stay close together.
When Ethel's large family of children were small and she was caring for her mother and father-in-law, she didn't have too much time to devote to church activity, but she was a faithful attender. In these later years, however, she has loved her Relief Society work. She served faithfully as a visiting teacher and for the past four years has been in charge of planning the lunches served on work days. Her officers never needed to worry on that score. One of the Relief Society officers has said since her passing, "Sister Huggard has sewed miles of carpet rags and quilts. She has pieced numberless quilt blocks and this past year she alone sewed more than three fourths of the welfare sewing assignment".
Ethel Ashton Huggard was born in Lehi, November 7, 1886, the daughter of Henry and Aldura Hammer Ashton, life long Lehi residents. She was the oldest of eight children, 4 of which died in infancy. Her sister Mable, 29, died when Ethel was 34 1/2 and she missed the companionship of this only sister greatly. She has two brothers, Warren Ashton, Salt Lake City, and marvin Ashton, Lehi. Warren was very ill two years ago, and Ethel made repeated trips to Salt Lake City to visit him.
When she was 8 she was baptized and confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day saints, and took an active part in the Lehi First ward. She completed the 8th grade in Lehi, and then went to work for her grandparents in the old Lehi Hammer Hotel. Later she worked in the Lehi Knitting Factory. Her life has been one of hard work. Her father died when she was 19, having never recovered from injuries sustained in the Lehi Sugar Factory four years before. Being the oldest child, she helped care for her mother and brothers an sister.
Ethel Ashton and Frank Huggard were married December 2, 1908, in Salt Lake City. They made their first home in Lehi for 3 years and then moved to American Fork where they have since lived. The two oldest daughters were born in Lehi and seven other children blessed their home after coming here.
For three years, 1942-1945, Sister Huggard worked in the school lunch room in the Harrington School.
On last Nov. 5th she sustained a stroke which impaired her health. On Feb. 13, 1954 she passed away. She is survived by her husband, five daughters and four sons, Mrs. Elwood Drew (Aleta), Alpine; Mrs. Karl Davis (Effie), American Fork; Mrs. Kenneth Binns (Mable), Ogden; Earl C. Hoggard, Mrs. Mary Johnson, American Fork; Frank A. Huggard, Lehi; Mrs. Glen Ovard (Blanche), Glen James (Jim) Huggard and Max H. Huggard, American Fork. She is survived also by 20 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild and the two brothers.
