- John Farrar was a silk spinner. In the 1850 census, his occupaton was called a 'mule' spinner, but this was due to terminology in the textile business and the hearing of a strong English accent in the ear of the census taker.
He was in charge of the spinning department of General Wade Hampton's Cotton Mill near Columbia, South Carolina.

"State of Wisconsin, Walworth County.
John Farrar personally appeared before the subscriber, the clerk of the circuit court, within and fo rthe county aforesaid, being a court of record, and made oath that he was born in England on or about the year eighteen hundred and sixteen that he emitrated to the United States, and landed at the port of New York on or about the month of July in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred forty seven that it is bonafide his intention to become a citizen of the United States, and to renounce forever all allegiance and fielity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatsoever, and particularly to Victoria, Queen of Great Britain whereof he is a subject.
Subscribed and Sworn to before me this 26th day of October A.D. 1852.
