  Notes	Joseph was a private in Company "E" of the Mormon Battalion. His father died when he was ten years old. All of the nine children except the youngest hired out to work "for their clothes." He was converted to Mormonism in 1837, but not baptized until later. He went to Nauvoo in 1841. He settled out on the prairie. He was sick but struggled along. There was an exodus in to Iowa in 1846. He enlisted in the Mormon Battalion and had a fairly detailed Battalion journal, 1846-47. He said, "We were used more like niggers by our lutenent than white folks."
