Copy of letter written to Rhoda S. Lawrence by her brother, Ephraim Sanford
29 Aug 1847
Dear Sister,
I take the opportunity of writing to you to let you know of our health and welfare. Everyone all well at present and hope these lines find you enjoying the same blessings. We received yours on the 15th of this month and was glad to hear from you but I have sorrowful news to write to you and should have wrote to you before if I had have noew where to have found you. Your old father is dead. He died on the 23rd day of April with the lung fever he was sick only one week the poor old man took his death last winter. I think on them large prairies he said that he was willing to go he died in his wright mind he was living at my house. I went after him last spring to the wotsway river but he did not stay long with me after he got here. Mother been sick all summer. She fell and it hurt herself very bad in one of her hips. She is lame yet and I think she always will be, her health is some better now than it has been. She is at my house now and both of the girls they have been at turns for the last two months they came to my house last Sunday. Ira Thornton's folks was well and last we heard from them. They live at Cincinnati on the Mississippi river about 20 miles from my house Thomas and Charlotte lives there too and we will. Dear Sister it is hard for you to be in a strange place with your family of girls and no one to help you. I no and if you were here I could help you some for we have good crops this year and if you was here you could get plenty of everything you want and you can come here and stay this winter if you can't content yourself to stay any longer if your oxen was here. I would winter them for you for I have got plenty of corn but if you can get them wintered there it would be better for you com by water cheaper than you can by land and if you will come and stay this winter I will come after you this fall your old mother wants you to come very much and so do we all want you to come. I write with but little hopes of your ever getting these few lines for it is so uncertain about a letter wreaching you that I have not much faith. Give our respects to John and Jane and the children. I want you to write one as soon as you get this letter without fail and tell me when you want me to come after you.
Ephraim Sanford
To Rhoda Lawrence
