BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: James Chilton, a tailor by trade, was the oldest Mayflowerpassenger,andone of the first to die after reaching the New World. Hewas bornandraised in Canterbury, Kent, England and around 1600 movedtoSandwich,England.
By 1615 James and at least some of his children were livinginLeyden,Holland. On 28 April 1619, James Chilton and hisdaughterIsabella werecaught in an anti-Armenian riot and James was hit inthehead with alarge stone and required the services of the townsurgeon,Jacob Hey.
He came on the Mayflower with his wife Susanna and daughterMary.Susannadied shortly after James, leaving their daughter orphaned;sheprobablyjoined with the household of Myles Standish.
Mary Chilton came on the Mayflower at the young age of 13, andlegendhasit she was the first female to step ashore at Plymouth. ShemarriedJohnWinslow, who came in the ship Fortune, and was the brotherofMayflowerpassengers Edward Winslow and Gilbert Winslow.

JAMES CHILTON
James Chilton was born in England around 1556. He was a resident of Canterbury.
James Chilton was part of the Pilgrim Separatist community in Leiden. In 1620, he journeyed to Plymouth on the Mayflower with his wife and daughter Mary. James Chilton died before the Mayflower reached Plymouth, on 8 December 1620, while the ship was anchored in Provincetown Harbor. His wife died shortly thereafter.
James Chilton's daughter Mary later married John Winslow.
