    Notes
    • Dirck Hals, Frans Hals's younger brother, was also a painter. He specialized in elegantly dressed 'companies'.

Dirck was the younger brother of Frans Hals who was probably also his teacher, but the painters who influenced Dirck were Esaias van de Velde and Willem Buytewech. Apart from a few portraits, he devoted himself exclusively to the painting of conversation pieces - the cheerful domestic life of prosperous burghers in their houses or gardens. He was not interested in the serious side of life; in his work he depicted people in conversation or while flirting, making music and dancing, eating and drinking. His interiors are hardly worked out, all the emphasis is put on fashionable dress and colourful representation. He succeeded in putting across people's high spirits through facial expression, costly dress, posture and loose grouping.

Frans was son of the paņero Franchoys Hals, coming from Malinas, and of Adriaentgen van Geertenrijck, original of Amberes. In this same city a brother of called Frans Joost will be born that also will be painter, although we do not know no his works. From 1585 Franchoys Hals and Adriaentgen van Geertenrijck they do not appear in the censuses of Amberes. Possibly they emigrated, next to a good handful of citizens, when the Spanish troops occupied the city the 17 of August, looking for refuge before more than presumable religious persecutions. The 19 of March of 1591 are baptized in Haarlem a new member of the Hals family, Dirck.

      DIRCK HALS

      1591 - Haarlem - 1656

Dirck Hals was a painter and draughtsman of genre scenes with small-scale figures, particularly merry companies in interiors and bucolic landscapes. Dirck, the younger brother of Frans Hals (c.1582/3-1666), was born in Haarlem in 1591. His father Franchoys Hals, a clothworker originally from Mechelen, and his wife Adriaentgen van Geertenrijck had emigrated from Antwerp some time after 1585 to escape the brutal regime of the Duke of Parma.

According to Houbraken, Dirck studied with his brother Frans. From 1618 to 1626, and again in 1640, he was a member of De Wijngaertranken, the rhetoricians chamber to which Frans also belonged. He was a member of the guild of St Luke in Haarlem from 1627 until his death. Dirck and his wife Agnietje Jans had seven children, including the painter Antonius Hals (b.1621). Dirck is recorded in Leiden in 1641-2 and again in 1648-9; he may have spent some of the intervening years there. He died in Haarlem in 1656.

In his Beschrijvinge ende lof der Stad Haerlem (1628), Samuel Ampzing praised Dirck Hals for his neat little figures. Most of his paintings are signed and dated between 1619 and 1654. He collaborated with the architectural painters Dirck van Delen (1605-1671) and Bartholomeus van Bassen (c.1590-1652), providing the figure groups for lavish perspective interiors.

The work of Dirck Hals is represented in the Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem; the GemÃĪldegalerie der Akademie der bildenden Kunste, Vienna; the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest; the Hermitage, St Petersburg; Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Landesmuseum, Mainz; the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam and the Mauritshuis, The Hague.

      Hals.

Dutch family of painters of Flemish origin. The brothers (1) Frans Hals and (2) Dirck Hals were the sons of Franchoys Hals, a clothworker from Mechelen, who moved to Antwerp, where Frans was born. They left Antwerp in 1585 and by 1591 had settled in Haarlem. Frans Hals was one of the first great artists in the new Dutch Republic and is generally regarded as an outstanding portrait painter. His brother Dirck, who, according to Houbraken, trained under him, was noted for small genre paintings. Five of Frans's sons were painters: Harmen Hals (bapt Haarlem, 2 Sept 1611; bur Haarlem, 15 Feb 1669), Frans Hals the younger (bapt Haarlem, 16 May 1618; d Haarlem, April 1669) and Reynier Hals (bapt Haarlem, 11 Feb 1627; d Amsterdam, 1671) were all genre painters, while Nicolaes [Claes] Hals (bapt Haarlem, 25 July 1628; bur Haarlem, 17 July 1686) specialized in landscape printing, and Johannes [Jan] Hals ( fl 1635-74) painted portraits, genre and history subjects. (2) Dirck Hals had seven children by his wife, Agneta Jans (d 1662), the eldest of whom, Anthonie Hals (b Haarlem, 1621; d before 25 Aug 1702), became a painter and, like his father, executed genre subjects.
