| Notes |
- Samuel Kempton was listed as a shipwright in a deed recorded in 1739 at Plymouth. About the same time that Samuel had married Mercy Dunham, his brother Thomas died in Boston leaving an infant son Thomas. Evidently he was sent to Plymouth to be raised by his uncle Samuel Kempton. Samuel Kempton had all of his children baptized in the Plymouth First Church at the same time on 24 September 1721. Thomas was listed as being there; "Thomas being about 17 years of age covenanted on his own account."
Samuel and mercy (Dunham) Kempton maintained her mother at their home in Plymouth and were forced to go to court to get some of her other children to help in her support. The following records appear:
General Sessions, September 1740:
"(Plymouth) that he hath for Some time maintained his Ancient Mother in Law Bathshia Dunham, which he thnks unreasonable."
The Court ordered:
"the severall persons mentioned on the back of said Petition living in the County be Cited to appear at the next term to show Cause, if any they have, why they should not bear there proportion of the aforsaid person's maintenance."
General Sessions, March 1740 / 1: Petition of Samuel Kempton (Plymouth Shipwright) from December term 1740:
"that your Petitioner the beginning of October A.D. 1739 took into his house and family his aged mother in Law Bathua Donham, widdow, under Necessitous Circumstances, much impared in her health and senses who he hath maintained at his own Costs Except four pounds Given her as One of the poor of the Town, and your Petitioner's Circumstances not well allowing him to be at the Charge and trouble (which is considerable) of Maintenance Needfull for her Comfort, hath often times applyed himselfe to the other sons and daughters of his said Mother in Law, desireing theire assistance in part or in proportion towards her maintence, which they all Refuse doing. Whereby your Petitioner finds mimselfe much aggreived and Cannot keep her much longer, humbly Entreating assistance for Redress in this affaire"
Court ordered those relatives mentioned in the petition to appear at the next term to answer for their nonsupport. At present term Court ordered:
"The the Children and Grand Children of the said Bathshua Donham's maintenance after the Rate of Thirty-six pounds a year. Commencing on the first of October A.D. 1739" and apportioned as follows: Cornelius Clarke, who maried her daughter Susanna -- Pounds 6; Nathaniel Donham and Ezekiel Donham, her grandsons -- Pounds six; Sylvanus and Cornelius Donham, Two Sons of her son Israel Donham, deceased -- Pounds Six; Elisha Donham, in Casco Bay -- Pounds Six; John Colling, who married her daughter Bathshua -- Pounds Six and Samuel Kempton -- Pounds Six."
