  Notes	LDS Biographical Encyclopedia - Vol 1, pg 404 Griffin, William Hyrum, Bishop of Newton, Cache county, Utah, is the son of William Griffin and Mary Pitts, and was born Nov. 8, 1848, at Naunton Beachamp, Worcestershire, England. His boyhood days were spent in his native land; he commenced to work when only eight years old and his education was limited to what little he [p.405] learned in the Church of England Sunday schools. He was baptized at the age of eight years and emigrated to Utah in 1864. After residing for some time in Clarkston, Cache county, he located in Newton in 1870 where he still resides. In October, 1870, he married Bessie Trehern. From June, 1877, to 1884, he acted as second counselor to Bishop Wm. F. Rigby; subsequently he acted as first counselor to Bishop Hans Funk, whom he succeeded as Bishop of Newton Ward, Feb. 5, 1893. For having obeyed the law of plural marriage and for living with his wives he was imprisoned in the Utah penitentiary from Feb. 12, 1888, to June 13, 1888.
