Former educator Elsie Bennett Essex dies; services set Wednesday morning.
Boone County native and former educator Elsie Bennett Essex, 95, died Sunday evening at Golden Manor Health Care Center where she had been a resident since this summer. Prior to that time, she had made her home at 517 E. Washington St. Lebanon.
She was born near Mechanicsburg Nov. 28, 1885, a daughter of Silas W. and Elizabeth Jane (McCance) Bennett. She was married Oct. 24, 1906 at Lebanon to George F. L. Essex Jr. He died July 6, 1947.
Mrs. Essex was reared in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis A. Edens following the death of her mother in 1895. She lived most of her life in Lebanon with the exception of 32 years when she lived in Colorado Springs, Colo., where she taught junior high school for 20 years.
She was a 1904 graduate of Lebanon High School and a 1923 graduate of Colorado College, Colorado Springs. Prior to moving to Colorado, Mrs. Essex also taught in Clinton Township and Lebanon schools.
Known to her many friends and acquaintances as a generous and loving woman who was very proud of her Boone County heritage, Mrs. Essex was a member of Florentine Club and an honorary member of Tourist Club. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and a member of Phi Beta Kappa Scholastic Society at Colorado College.
Surviving are a son Dean M. Essex of Santa Clara, Calif., three grandchidren and four great-grandchildren. Two brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Russell and Hitch Funeral Home, Lebanon, with the Rev. Raymond King officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
