- ASSOCIATIONS: Lothrop's church record states that "Egglin Handford, Mr. Hatherley's sister, joined November 21, 1635." She was Eglin (Hatherly) (Downe) Hanford, baptized at Winkleigh, Devonshire, on 8 June 1586 [M&JCH 18:74] and called "Eylin Hanver" in the will of their mother in 1637 [Stevens-Miller Anc 490; NEHGR 52:76]. As the widow of Jeffrey Hanford of Alverdiscott, Devonshire, she came, aged forty-six, with her daughters, Margaret and Elizabeth on the Planter, arriving in Boston in June 1635 [Hotten 56].
She had in all four daughters and a son, all of whom came to New England: Susanna, who m. (1) John Whiston and (2) William Brooks; Lettice, who m. (1) Edward Foster and (2) Edward Jenkins; Margaret, who m. Isaac Robinson; Elizabeth, who m. Nicholas Wade; and Thomas, who m. (1) Hannah Newberry and (2) Mary (Miles) Ince [Stevens-Miller Anc 485-89].

CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: "Egglin Hanford, Mr. Hatherley's sister" was admitted to Scituate church on 21 November 1635 [NEHGR 9:280].
ESTATE: On 24 February 1640[/1?], "Tymothy Hatherley of Scituate" deeded to "Egline Hanford of Scituate aforesaid five acres of land ... which land lyeth in Scituate on the north side of the Stony Brook the third lot from the brook"; annotated "This land was given to the said Egline Hanford the xxvijth day of September in the year Anno Domini 1634" (the year before her arrival) [PCR 12:71].
BIRTH: Baptized Winkleigh, Devonshire, 8 June 1586, daughter of Robert and Ellinor (_____) Hatherly [M&JCH 18:74] (aged 46 in 1635 [Hotten 56]).
DEATH: After 17 January 1653[/54?] (when named in will of her third husband).
MARRIAGE: (1) By about 1609 _____ Downe.
(2) Fremington, Devonshire, 31 March 1611 Jeffrey Hanford, who was buried at Alverdiscott, Devonshire, on 12 May 1626 [Stevens-Miller Anc 485].

v THOMAS, b. say 1623; m. (1) by an unknown date Hannah Newberry, daughter of THOMAS NEWBERRY {1634, Dorchester} [Stevens-Miller Anc 487 (evidence not provided)]; m. (2) by 1662 Mary (Miles) Ince, daughter of Richard Miles and widow of Jonathan Ince [Stevens-Miller Anc 487].
ASSOCIATIONS: Eglin (Hatherly) (Downe) (Hanford) Sillis was sister of TIMOTHY HATHERLY {1623, Plymouth} [GMB 2:876-81]. In his will of 20 December 1664, Timothy Hatherly made bequests to "Edward Jenkens his wife and children," to "Nicholas Wade his wife and children," to "Susanna the wife of Will[i]am Brookes and her children," to "Timothy Foster ... and to Elizabeth Foster," to "Mr. Thomas Hanford," and to "Fear Robinson now the wife of Samuell Baker ... and to the other three children of Isacke Robinson, John Isacke and Mercy" [GMB 2:879, citing MD 16:158-60, citing PCPR 2:2:34]. He does not state his relationship with these legatees, but they are grouped together, ahead of his stepchildren and other legatees.
COMMENTS: On 10 April 1635, "Eglin Hanford," aged 46, and "2 daughters, Margaret Hanford," aged 16, and "Eliz[abeth] Hanford," aged 14, along with "Rodolphus Elmes," aged 15, and "Tho[mas] Stansley," aged 16, were enrolled at London as passengers for New England on the Defence [Hotten 56].
Lettice Hanford clearly preceded her mother and younger sisters to New England, as she was married in Scituate on 8 April 1635, and her sister Susanna may also have come before 1635. How much before 1635 they arrived is not known.
