      Samuel Hammer's Funeral
      1879 - 1907

One of the largest funerals ever held in Lehi was Tuesday afternoon at the tabernacle over the remains of Samuel Hammer.

The Lehi Fire Brigade had charge of the funeral. Bishop Andrew Fjeld of the first ward presided.

Choir sang: "Nearer My Good To Thee"

      Prayer: Eli Kendall

Singing: I Need Thee Every Hour

Bishop Fjeld gave a short talk and read the following biographical sketch and resolutions of respect.

      Sketch

Samuel Hammer, son of Annie Reese and Hans Hammer, was born in Lehi, Utah, September 14th 1879. He received his education in the district schools of his native city and on his twentieth birthday married Malinda Stewart, a daughter of Arthur and Sarah P. Stewart.

At the age of eight he was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and about a year ago was ordained an Elder.

For some time he held the position of secretary of the Young Men's Mutual Improvement Association, performing the labors very faithfully and it was a source of deep regret when business compelled him to resign.

He as principally followed the livery business with his brothers. He was one of the charter members of the Lehi Volunteer Fire Brigade, performing these duties with diligence, thus showing a very commendable public spirit.
He was always a very industrious straight forward citizen, a good neighbor, a dutiful son and a kind and affectionate husband.

He has been a great sufferer for the past two years and finally went to the hospital to seek relief from a very critical operation of the kidneys, which however proved fatal. He died in the L. D. S. Hospital May 5th 1907, aged 27 years 7 months and 19 days.

His last words on earth were to his grief stricken wife as he fondly held her hand; "Lind I must leave you for I am holding Father's and Lizzies hands and the angels are singing all around me.

Be it further:
Resolved, that a copy be sent to his wife and mother, and a copy to the Lehi Banner and a copy be put upon the minutes the the brigade.

Whereas an all wise providence in his infinite wisdom, has visited the home of Malinda Hammer, one of the worthy members of the D. R. Society of Lehi, and taken therefrom her beloved husband, Samuel Hammer.

Therefore be it resolved, that we extend to her our heartfelt sympathy in this hour of bereavement and entreat her to trust with fullest faith and confidence in the "Giver of all Good" and look forward to the glorious time when meetings will be joyful and partings no more.

Committee of the D. R. Society
John Y. Smith was first speaker. His subject being, "Life Beyond" and the "Immortality of the Soul".

President A. J. Evans spoke of the life and character of the deceased and also of the resurrection.

"O Grave Where is thy Victory" was sang by John Y. Smith and choir.

The Fire Brigade with thirty members dressed in their uniforms, led the procession from his home to the tabernacle.

The casket was covered with beautiful flowers. A very large number attended the services and many followed the remains to their last resting place at the city cemetery.

      Card of Thanks
We wish to than all who so kindly helped in any way during the illness and funeral of my husband.
