| across the plains in a covered wagon with her father and sister Julia |
- Helen and Julia were given ten cents each by their father while crossing the plains. He told them they could spend it on anything they wanted. When they reached an outpost they decided to spend the money. They had lived on dried food for months and wanted fresh vegetables. The only fresh vegetables available at the outpost were green onions. Helen declaired that "nothing ever tasted better in the world than those green onions."
