  	Newton Gray Obituary Pioneer Grocery Store Owner at Oakdale Succumbs Oakdale, July 7 - Newton B. Gray, 66, pioneer of the Oakdale district, died last night at the family home on F Street. He was born June 8, 1871, on the Grey ranch six miles east of Oakdale on the Cooperstown Road. Gray received his education in the local schools. In 1905, he and his brother, W. R. Gray,established the Gray Bros. Grocery on East Railroad Avenue. Retiring from active business a few years ago, they sold the store to Charles Gray, son of N. B. Gray. Ill for over a year, it was only within the past few weeks that his condition became serious. Grave leaves two children, Charles Gray and Mrs. Verne Sawyer of Oakdale, and two brothers, Frank Gray of Santa Cruz and W. R. Gray of Oakdale. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at the Oakdale Undertaking Parlor with interment in the Citizens Cemetery. Modesteo Bee and Herald News - 8 Aug 1937.

  Notes	From Chris Sawyer via e-mail: Maud's husband Newton B. Gray was the son of Manuel Gray native of England, born in 1830, his parents being Luke and Sarah Gray, both natives of England. They were the parents of eight children, Manuel being the third. He was reared and educated in his native country, and went from there to the province of Newfoundland, where he was engaged for two and a half years in fishing; thence to the State of Maine. Married Melvina L Stearns, in Oakdale, California. They had five children, Thomas, William, Frank, Newton B., and Andrew. Andrew drowned in the river about 5 yrs. old. Manuel and Melvina divorced and she married William W. Rutherford.
